Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

  • Description: An uncontrollable urge to move the legs, often associated with discomfort or unusual sensations.
  • Symptoms: Tingling, aching, itching, or crawling sensations in the legs, especially during rest or at night.

  • Symptoms: Sudden muscle weakness (cataplexy), sleep paralysis, vivid dreams or hallucinations, and uncontrollable daytime sleep attacks.

Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders

  • Description: Disruption of the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
  • Symptoms: Difficulty sleeping or waking at desired times, daytime fatigue, and irregular sleep patterns.
  • Treatment: Light therapy, melatonin supplements, behavioural therapy, and maintaining a consistent sleep routine.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment of sleep disorders can significantly improve sleep quality, daytime functioning, and overall health.

Symptoms of Sleep Disorders

Common symptoms of sleep disorders may include:

  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Loud snoring or gasping for air during sleep
  • Uncontrollable movements or discomfort during sleep
  • Irregular or disrupted sleep patterns
  • Waking up feeling tired or unrefreshed

If these symptoms persist and begin affecting daily activities, concentration, mood, or overall health, it is important to seek medical evaluation for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosing and Treatment of Sleep Disorders

Diagnosis of Sleep Disorders

  • Detailed Medical History: A comprehensive evaluation of sleep patterns, lifestyle habits, medical history, medications, and any underlying health conditions affecting sleep quality.
  • Sleep Diary: Maintaining a record of sleeping and waking patterns over a period of time to help identify irregular sleep behaviours and triggers.
  • Polysomnography (Sleep Study): An overnight diagnostic test that monitors brain activity, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, eye movements, heart rate, and muscle activity during sleep.
  • Home Sleep Apnea Testing: A convenient at-home diagnostic method commonly used to detect obstructive sleep apnea and monitor breathing disturbances during sleep.

Accurate diagnosis is essential for identifying the underlying sleep disorder and developing an effective treatment plan to improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
